Candle Lighting Programme Organised In Kokrajhar


KOKRAJHAR, SEP 20: A candle lighting programme was carried out in front of Kokrajhar Law College complex today evening in protest against the Lungsung encounter which had killed two persons in Kokrajhar district on Saturday early morning.

Members from Bodoland Law Student’s Organisation and Assam Law Council participated the candle lighting programme and demanded a high level judicial inquiry into the encounter incident which was organised by Bodoland Law Student’s Organisation.

The student’s organisation strongly condemned the encounter incident and expresses serious concern over the perpetration of encounter which has created chaos among the society.

The student’s organisation shouted slogans and demanded a high level judicial inquiry into the encounter incident as justice to the victim’s family members.

The student body also submitted a memorandum to the chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Deputy Commissioner Kokrajhar Varnali Deka that sought a strict judicial inquiry into the fake encounter of two persons recently in Kokrajhar district.

The recent incident of two people being gunned down in a fake encounter by the state police. It should be noted that on September 17, two erstwhile members of a militant outfit, namely Janak Kumar Brahma and Jwngsar Mushahary, who had met a road accident were picked up by the police and taken to Serfanguri Police Station of Kokrajhar district.

Their family members were contacted and told that they were well and alive with minor injuries who were kept at the Serfanguri police station. However, later that night the family was again informed that they were being taken to the Kokrajhar Police Station. Following this, the next morming they were reported to have been killed.

“The families of the deceased have claimed that this is just another instance of a fake encounter. This incident of fake encounter has shaken the people of Assam. While the state has the right to take recourse to legitimate violence, any incident of the use of illegitimate violence must be probed and the culprits be brought to justice”.

Moreover, the incident has shaken the confidence of the people in the state agencies, and immediate steps must be taken to restore their confidence in the state agencies and machinery”, the memorandum read.

The student body has demanded a judicial investigation into the incident and perpetrators should be beought to justice.

The student body also demanded for providing an adequate compensation and legal help to the family members of the deceased.
