Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani Re-arrested After Bail In Assam


Kokrajhar, April 25: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, who was arrested by Assam police over purported tweets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was granted bail today but was re-arrested in a new case just after he was granted bail by a court in Kokrajhar, Assam.

Mevani bail has been granted in connection with the case lodged in Kokrajhar. But a separate case was lodged in nearby Barpeta district (Barpeta Road P.S-81/22 u/s294/323/353/354 IPC) and was arrested again and taken to Barpeta district. On Sunday, First class judicial magistrate in Kokrajhar had sent Mevani to one-day judicial custody. The court had reserved its order on the bail application in the tweets case yesterday.

Mevani was earlier on April 21 sent for three days police custody by the CJM, Kokrajhar. Mavani was taken to Barpeta from Kokrajhar District Jail today around 4pm.

Mevani, a prominent Dalit leader from Gujarat was arrested by the Assam Police on April 20 from Palanpur circuit House in Gujarat and brought to Assam Kokrajhar. He was arrested after a First Information Report (FIR) was registered by BTR executive member from BJP at Kokrajhar police station on 19 April 2022 under section 153A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with offences related to promoting enmity between communities.
