Kokrajhar, June 16: Incessant rains since the last few days and the rising water level of major rivers flowing downstream through Lower Assam districts from upstream Bhutan has created flash flood in many areas in Kokrajhar and neighbouring area.
Many parts of the Kokrajhar municipality area including Assam Oil police point, Rabindra Nagar, Santinagar, Rupathi Nwgwr, Basic Training Centre, Mainao Nwgwr, Mizing Nwgwr, Vivekananda Path, Thanapara, Gwjwnpuri, Civil Line, RNB road, Tengapara, JD Road, Hatimatha were flooded causing much problem to the people. The water has entered the houses and office buildings in many areas. 101 families at Bagisa Char area were inundated by the rising water of Gaurang river. Kokajhar district administration has set up 2 relief camps at Ambedkar Bhawan in Kokrajhar town.
Over 156 families from Gwjwnpuri area under East Maligaon- Mohanpur VCDC were forced to take relief shelter at Bishmuri after their houses were flooded.
The flood water has also submerged many areas of Gossaigaon town.
The rising water level of major rivers like Gaurang, Swrmanga, Hell, Gongia, Sonkosh, Champamati flowing downstream through Lower Assam districts from upstream Bhutan and incessant rains in the last few days has worsened the situation in many parts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and lower Assam districts.
The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) administration and the district administration has been monitoring the flood situation in the district. The administration has put on alert the SDRF to deal with the situation.
