Media Fraternities Staged Sit In Demo In Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, FEB 8: Media fraternities of Kokrajhar Press Club have staged a protest demonstration today in front of Kokrajhar Press Club office premises in Kokrajhar in protest against attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath at Basugaon.

The sit in protest demonstration was carried out by Kokrajhar Press Club in association with Bodoland Journalists Association to pressurise immediate step against the two police personel and stringent punishment against the atrocities on journalist Jayanta Debnath.

The media persons from different media house participated the sit in protest demonstration with wearing black badge while protesting the atrocities on journalists and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the two police personel who were involved with attacked on journalist Debnath.

A memorandum was submitted to the chief minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma through Diputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar Varnali Deka seeking immediate action against the police personel who attacked on journalist Jayanta Debnath on Monday at Basugaon of Chirang district.

The Kokrajhar Press Club has demanded a strict action on the police personnel involved in the attack of journalist Jayanta Debnath at Basugaon on February 7 and to stop all forms of atrocities on media persons.

The media fraternity of Kokrajhar deeply pained at the attack of journalist Jayanta Debnath at Basugaon town by police personnel on February 7, 2022 that brings a sense of insecurity among the media persons. We feel that the attack on the journalists is the attacked on the fourth pillar of the country and we cannot allow it to be threatened.

The Kokrajhar Press Club will not tolerate any misadventure on working journalists and we condemned the attack on Jayanta Debnath of Basugaon in Chirang district with strongest term. And at the same time, we don’t want exercise of excessive power police on media persons which will have implications on freedom of expression.

” The media persons of Kokrajhar today compelled to bring out a protest progamme at Kokrajhar against manhandle of journalist”, the memorandum read.

Kokrajhar Press Club have demanded an immediate inquiry and arrest of police personnel involved in attack of journalist Jayanta Debnath of Basugaon in Chirang district and stringent punishment and ensure safety and security by easing atrocities on media persons.

Bodoland Journalists Association (BJA) expressed it’s serious concerned over the attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath who is still today under treatment at a private hospital in Bongaigaon.

President of the associaion Abu Bakkar Siddique and general secretary Hantigiri Narzary said that the attacked on a journalist was unfortunate and unwanted for the media persons in the state.

The association leaders demanded a high level investigation into the incident and immediate arrests of the two police personels who were involved with the journalists attack.

The association urged the government to take a safe and safety measures for the media persons in the state in days to come.

Several press club, journalists federation have also staged protest demonstration against the atrocities on media persons.

Meanwhile,special DGP and in-charge IGP of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Dr L R Bishnoi told that a strict investigation has started into the attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath and two police personel are so far closed to the reserved.

He said that the police administration is shocked with the incident on a journalist at Basugaon in Chirang district on Monday and necessary action has stepped up against the incident. He said that the incident was unfortunate for the police administration and involved police personel would be punished.

He informed that the two police personel have issued fined of tuned Rs. 1000 each for violating the traffic rules for not wearing helmets during the riding of two wheelers.

He has assured that the police personel are facing severe strict actions from police administration.
