SSB Rescued Endangered Species Gecko Tokay


KOKRAJHAR, OCT 10: Jawans of Sasastra Seema Bal (SSB) have rescued endangered species Gecko Tokay along the Indo-Bhutan border area near Kumarikata in Baksa district on Sunday which was smuggled by smugglers.

According to SSB official statement, on the basis of information received from intelligence set-up of 24 battalion of SSB Rangia about smuggling of Gecko Tokay by the smugglers at Indo-Bhutan Border area near Rangia, Hrishikesh Sharma, Commandant 24 Bn SSB Rangia deputed a small action team (SAT) under the command of Sarma, assistant commandant to nab the criminals.

Acting on the tipoff Small Action Team of the unit conducted a joint search operation with forest staff Kumarikata today at Bimlanagar village and rescued one Gecko Tokay and apprehended two persons for smuggling the endangered species in the area.

The apprehended were identified as Ashrof Ali (23) and Roma Kanta Das (30) of Bimalanagar.

Later seized Lizards and apprehended pcrsons were handed over to forest Range Office Kumarikata and a case has been registered under Forest Act.

Sharma, commandant 24 Bn SSB Rangia said that smugglers of Gecko Tokay are active in Baksa district and sale these Gecko Tokay in international markets.

The SSB Rangia rescued a large number Tokay in previous year from Indo-Bhutan Border area and constantly trying to save wild life from the hands of poachers.
