Union Minister Of State For Home Nityanand Rai Visits Kokrajhar, Chirang


Kokrajhar, Nov 2: Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai today visited Kokrajhar and inaugurated the newly constructed infrastructure at 6th Bn Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Raniguli in Kokrajhar.

The minister inaugurated the newly constructed barrack and staff quarters. He also interacted with jawans at SSB camp.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister spoke regarding the current security scenario and duties being performed by the SSB and lauded the role of SSB in guarding the open and porous borders of India with Nepal and Bhutan, maintaining and honouring the tradition of friendly relations with both these countries and for playing an important role in the fight against terrorism and Naxalism.


Sonam Badh, DIG, Frontier, Headquarter, SSB spoke on the role of history of SSB, including how it came into being in the form of Special Service Bureau under the Cabinet Secretariat in 1963 after the Indo-China war and subsequently transformed into Sashastra Seema Bal in 2001 when it was given the task of manning the border with Nepal. He stated that from earlier role of spreading the spirit of patriotism among the border people, SSB role has changed to guarding the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders now. Besides the SSB continued to take up various civic action programmes for the greater welfare of the people reflecting its commitment for the welfare of the people.

Joint Secretary (Police) Sudhesh Kumar Sahi, DIG Antony Thamai, Commandant NK Tamta were among those present on the occasion.

The Union Minister later visited the 15th Battalion Headquarter of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) of Kajalgaon in Chirang district.

After arriving at Kajalgaon SSB Headquarter, the minister took salute of the SSB jawans followed by inaugurated the newly constructed barrak and staff quarters. The minister then, interacted with SSB jawans, where he had praised the dedication of jawans towards defending the country. He also salute their bravery and expressed his gratitude.

Thereafter, the union minister Nityanand Rai and Joint Secretary (Police) Sudhesh Kumar Sahi, who accompanied the union minister planted saplings in the premises of 15th Bn SSB headquarter.

Answering to a query of the media persons on why India is still under treat of China and Pakistan, especially in border affairs, union minister Nityanand Rai said that India is no longer what it used to be. “This is now 21st century’s India led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under Modi’s leadership, the morale of the people in the country’s army and security forces has been strengthened and the country’s borders have been secured as India never compromises on border security and sovereignty,” he added.

On the occasion, Chirang Deputy Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah, Chirang Superintendent of Police Pranjit Borah, DIG of SSB Frontier Guwahati Sanam Bodh, DIG SHQ, Bongaigaon, AK Anthony and DB Sanar, Commanding Officer of 15th Bn SSB, Kajalgaon were present.
